In true B&B CC fashion, the hordes of hooligans were treated to a thriller as the final match of the season went right down to the wire. The day began with high expectations as a rare sultry day meant it actually did feel like we were playing a summer sport after all. In anticipation of a 1pm start, the Beeding masses arrived within good time to inspect what looked to be a hard and fast strip. However, the opposition were clearly less enthused and ambled pitch-ward at a rather more sedate pace. The match eventually got underway some 30 minutes late, and after being asked to bowl first, Smudge (0-18) and Hedger (1-15) began with some very tight and restrictive bowling, with Hedger’s wicket being a sharp piece of fielding by Mustang behind the stumps. Chippy (2-43) and Ollie (0-14) soon followed suit, with their powerful number 3 trying one big shot too many and being bowled by Chippy. ‘What ya talkin’ about?’ (1-37) started off very well but soon felt the force of another of their big hitters who made a decent 50. Binnsy (5-30) (who incidentally is likely to volunteer for match report duty on a more regular basis) and Gazza (0-36) finished off the bowling, the former getting some useful turn off the pitch (Greeners take note ;)) and catching in the field, the latter generating some decent pace and bounce. A superb fielding performance, with not one ‘easy’ catch downed and some excellent ground fielding despite some frustrating shot placements from the opposition! Outwood set a total of 201-9, slightly more than the 180 that was hoped for, but still a gettable score going into the tea interval.

An excellent tea including Apple crumble and custard (still not a patch on Jo’s though), was devoured, mainly by The Lion and Hedger, and we set about the chase. The Lion (25) and JB (13) made a solid start, putting on 34 for the opening wicker. Oh sorry, wicket. This was an excellent foundation, and once Smudge (74) got going the ball started flying to the boundary at regular intervals. Once The Lion had been triggered to a plum pie full-toss, Gazza (1) set about the re-build. However, he too succumbed to a straight one. Buoyed in the pavilion by the ‘X-rated TMS’ discussions on topics such as ‘who was the most successful mass-murdering dictator, Stalin or Hitler?’ (you really had to be there), Mustang (27) entered the fray and set about forming a quick-scoring partnership with Smudge (74). The victory target was fast becoming realistic, but when Mustang got a good one from their young leg-spinner, the characteristic collapse soon set in. Binnsy (1) got a big turner and the call to play for the draw came from the skipper. However, Ollie (3) appeared not to hear this and after playing some neat strokes, decided to block half-way down the track and was stumped. Steve (1) followed soon after and the nail-biting began. James ‘What ya talkin’ about’ Willis (4) played some good defensive strokes and looked likely to see out the match, but then played a sweep off a straight one and was bowled. It was down to Chippy (0*) and Ian ‘A.C.’ Hedger (6*) to block out the last few deliveries. Needing to simply survive the final ball, the pair decided to take-on a potentially suicidal two, with the resulting throw going for four. A six was scored by Hedger all along the ground, the draw saved, and great preparation for the imminent ICL! B&B CC finishing on 171-9.

A really enjoyable and closely fought match played in good spirit. Well done to everyone, who all contributed to the cause. It was also great to see those who turned out at the Riser afterwards.

It just leaves me to say, I will never again look at a wicker chair in the same light...

An excellent, dictive report Binnsy.

2 Points:

1. Their Strip; Yr 5-30.

a. BF/DG working on this Over/Winter 11/12.

b. Spoke to Brian today; on your behest.

c. It's in the SOIL which supports the individual grass plant(s) - TURF.

d.Our Square wont be at that standard for another "few" seasons.

e.So, dream on and Dream: Away matches!
