August Bank Holiday Tour 2011

Hi Everyone
here's an update on how the organisation of this years tour is progressing.

Dates

Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th and Monday 29th of August. It's best to get down there on the Friday evening to enjoy the weekend fully.

Matches

We have fixtures confirmed for the Sunday and Monday of tour against Hythe Green and Mersham Sports respectively. Howard has been unable to source a compatible fixture for us for the Saturday.
However I spoke to the Chairman of Mersham Sports Cricket Club Yesterday and he is quietly confident that with his local knowledge he'll be able to fix us up a suitable fixture for the Saturday.
If he is unsuccessful then the plan is to hold a Golf Event at Biddenden Par 3 Golf Course (http://www.biddendenpar3golfcourse.co.uk/). A few of us played a round there last year and found it to be a well kept, challenging (for us) course even though the longest hole is 100 yds. Essentially you don't have to be a golfer to get round and have an enjoyable time.

Accommodation

As with previous years we will camp at Mersham Sports Cricket Club in Kent, it’s about 1 ½ hour’s drive on the motorway from Beeding. They allow us to camp on the edge of the outfield. It’s nice and flat and we have use the toilets and showers in the club house at any time we need. We also have access to the bar (on an honesty basis) and there is normally some one from Mersham there the whole time anyway.
If you wish to sleep somewhere with 4 solid walls then it is up to you organise this yourself.

Sundries

The Bank Holiday weekend is the culmination of Mersham's Cricket Week and they will be holding their big social night on the Sunday of our tour; this consists of a hog roast and live entertainment. We normally get back when the hog roast is done so if you wish to enjoy the whole event then you'll have to make your own arrangements with MSCC.
Geoff (Mersham's Chairman) has given his permission for us to use Mersham's Gas BBQ, so the plan is for us to do that on the Saturday evening. Cost will be £5ish to be collected on tour.
Please remember MSCC let us have full use of their field and facilities for free. We are also able to do what we like (within reason) when we like. I would like to ask all our cricketers who camp there to make a small donation (say £10) which I'll collect which we can give to then for putting up with us.

What I need from you

Can you either pm me or e mail me whether you intend to come on tour (yes or no) at the earliest opportunity. If you are undecided then please pm or e mail this to me as well.

Tour T Shirts

These will cost no more than £10 and will be ordinary plain T's with tour specific slogan on.
Can you either pm me or e mail me by the 29th of July if you would like one; please state your T shirt size. Also if you have a good slogan for a tour T Shirt then let me know ASAP as it's probably a dam sight better than what I can come up with (you will get your reward in Mesham). I'll collect the cost of your T shirt off you when I hand it to you.

My e mail bbccchairman@hotmail.co.uk

Cheers

Michael

Can we make the donation £20.00 per tent please.

This is much less than most Camp sites charge per night and we get 3 nights.

In case anyone is put off by the golf, don't be. It's a very friendly mixed ability place, I went round in hundreds of shots, as did a couple of others. The greens are challenging and some of the approaches are very tricky, certainly more so than Burgess Hill for example, but they let you turn up in jeans and you can borrow clubs, it's that laid back. It's good fun, you can try your hand at golf (on an admittedly challenging course) without any hassle from people behind you.

Guys. The level of the voluntary contribution will be what you are willing to pay and should reflect that we are not staying on a pukka campsite but are the invited guests of Mersham Sports Cricket Club. It will be a donation from each cricketer rather than a donation per tent. I would like to think that all those who go down and avail themselves of MSCC's hospitality will show their appreciation accordingly.

With the tour T shirts there are a number of you guys who will be bringing some younger Beedingites down, if you would like tour T's for them please let me know.

Thank you to everyone who has replied to my communications regarding tour whether it be yes, no or I can't tell you at the present time. It's much appreciated.

I think it shows that a lot of you are looking forward to it as much as me.

Less than two weeks to go guys.

I'll be contacting those that have told me that they are going on tour to reconfirm and to see what days you'll be down on.

Essential information for the tour. Especially for tour newbies

Where we are camping.... Mersham Sports Cricket Ground.

We will be pitching our tents on the edge of the outfield. It’s nice and flat and we have use the toilets and showers in the club house at any time we need.

For your sat nav the address is Flood Street, Mersham, Ashford Kent; the post code is TN25 6LY and the grid ref is 51.109288, 0.922830.
For anyone who's driving and who has not been there before the turn into the ground is over a small bridge. Be aware of this.
How to get there:

Motorway (recommended)

Fairly simple really. A23, M23 at Junction 8 join the M25 eastbound (signposted to Dartford/M11/Maidstone). After about 12 miles take the M26 (Dover/Channel Tunnel) this will after 9 miles merge with the M20. Stay on the M20 until junction 10 (Ashford, Brenzett) come off here and take the A20 signposted Sellindge and inside lane at the roundabout. Go past Tesco's and drive on the A20 for 1.4 miles then turn right onto 'The Street' (signposted Mersham). Drive through Mersham and take the right hand turn into Church Road and then drive 0.9 miles to Mersham Sports ground, which will be on the left hand side of the road. Allow about 1 ½ hours

Scenic

Lewes, Ringmer, Halland, Blackboys, Heathfield, Burwash, Hurst Green, Hawkhurst, Sandhurst, Tenterden, Bethersden, Ashford, Willesborough, A20 to Sellindge and Mersham. Allow just over 2 hours.

What to Bring:

Cricket Kit (obviously) and camping gear (tent, sleeping bag ect). Unless you are a committed camper there is no need to bring camp kitchens to feed yourself as Tescopolis is 10 minutes drive up the road. They'll provide a passable breakfast at a reasonable price without any washing up involved.

Match 1 Saturday 27th Aug

There is no game scheduled at present. However Mersham Sports are working on our behalf to get a fixture.
If we have no fixture then we will hold a Golf Event at Biddenden Par 3 Golf Course (http://www.biddendenpar3golfcourse.co.uk/). A few of us played a round there last year and found it to be a well kept, challenging (for us) course even though the longest hole is 100 yds. Essentially you don't have to be a golfer to get round and have an enjoyable time. If you have clubs bring them with you (there is sand) but it's not essential as club hire is included in the green fee.
Biddenden Par 3 Golf, Gribble Bridge Lane, Biddenden, Kent, TN27 8DH.
Grid 51.093247 0.651015

Match 2 Sunday 28th Aug 2.00 start vs Hythe Green CC

We'll start our day in Hythe with a pub meal at the Bell Inn which is on Seabrook Road (A259). From there it's just a short drive to the ground on South Road. After the match it's back to the Bell for after match drinks.
The Recreation Ground, South Road, Hythe, CT21 6AR Grid 51.067313 1.088306

Match 3 Monday 29th Aug 2.00 start vs Mersham Sports CC

This is probably the shortest journey to an away game we will ever have. Although they are a bit hung over after their cricket week and from Sunday night Mersham will have always provided very stiff opposition for us.

Other info:

Fines

Fines will be carried out this year! These will be of both a fun and a cricketing nature. The proceeds will go towards keeping both our opposition and our tour lubricated.

The Finemaster General is T1000.

Captains

The sides will as in previous years be skippered by members who have never captained a B&BCC side before. As a slight change there will be an experienced cricketer nominated for each match to act as Vice Captain for the day to mentor the Captain through the day.

Evening Entertainment

On both Friday and Saturday nights Mersham leave their clubhouse and bar open for us to use on an honour basis. If you have a drink you write it down on the list and pay in the morning.

Friday: Normally most guys get down there in daylight (Ali being the exception) pitch their tent and have a few beers in Mershams clubhouse.

Saturday: Mersham have given their permission for us to use their Gas BBQ, so the plan is for us to have a BGQ in the evening. Cost will be £5ish and will be collected on tour.

Sunday: Mersham Sports will be holding their big social night on this evening; this consists of a hog roast and live entertainment. We normally get back when the hog roast is done so if you wish to enjoy the whole event then you'll have to make your own arrangements with MSCC. They are quite happy for us to come in and enjoy the entertainment once the hog is consumed.

Other Entertainment

Paintball at Great Chart Golf and Leisure, Bears Lane, Great Chart. From £5 all in. Opens at 10am.
Cinema. Cineworld Multiplex, Eureka Entertainment Centre, Ashford, TN25 4BN.
Bowling. AMF Bowling, 43/79 Station Road, Ashford, TN23 1TP.

Food

The Farriers Arms The Forstal Mersham TN25 6NU (01233 720444)
Only 15 minutes walk from where we are camping, a very nice pub with decent food.

Tesco Extra. Hythe Road Ashford, TN24 0YE
Sainsbury. Simon Weil Road, Ashford. TN24 8YN.
Chinese take away. Kong Wah Chinese Take Away , 135 Church Road, Ashford,
TN24 0JQ
Indian Restaurants. Zarin Restaurant, 31 Bank Street, Ashford TN23 1DQ
Tandoori Nights, 9 Torrington Road, Ashford, TN23 7TF
MacDonald's. Orbital Park, Ashford TN24 0HT
KFC. Eureka Leisure Centre, Ashford, TN25 4BN
Fish and Chips. Tims Fish Bar. 129 Church Road Willesborough TN24 0JQ

Mersham Sports

Please remember Mersham Sports Cricket Club let us have full use of their field and facilities for free. We are also able to do what we like, (within reason) when we like. I would like to ask all our cricketers who camp there to make a small donation which will be collected on tour which we'll give to then for putting up with us.

Eddie is very generously offering to take down any excess equipment/baggage. If you need this service it will only cost you a beer or two.

Please note he will not take divan beds, fridges, bedside cabinets or chandeliers.
