In 1974 Beeding & Bramber CC joined forces with Soleham CC and was known as Beeding, Bramber & Soleham CC - it was my privilege to be club captain.
Some of you may recognise some Beeding & Bramber names from the past, such as Mike Rice, Peter Langridge and Gerald Clark who were members of the amalgamation.
We spent countless hours, week after week after week, rolling, cutting and rolling again to make some semblance of a pitch.
The first home match of the newly formed team resulted in a win against Findon III on Sunday, 23 June 1974 by 7 wickets. [Every win over Findon was a happy occasion for me.]
Now, whereas my memory of events has been dimmed through the fullness of time, I am able to recall that the pitch was a real stinker and the ball flew all over the place. Hopefully it has improved. Tony Eden bowled from the southern end and took 7-32, his best bowling figures at the time: I am quite certain he bettered those figures as the years went by.
I still have the Herald match report [dated 28 June 1974] and photographs from that historic event which I am unable to attach due to file size restrictions on this site. If anyone would like a copy, please respond to this posting with an email address.
The champagne mentioned in the report was a gift from the landlord of The King's Head to celebrate the occasion.
Mind you, after claiming (read the report) that "we will now continue to win", I don't think we won another game all season. Ah! The impulsiveness and bravado of youth!
Players in the photograph (when you get to see it) are:
[Back L-R] Dave Raines (?), Gerry Hardiman, Gerald Clark, Peter Langridge, Les Grover and Ashley Ralston.
[Front L-R] Geoff Bowker, Bob Banks, Ruth (can't recall her surname but she was a great scorer), Simon Paskin, Tony Eden and can't remember the young lad on the end.

There is not very much that I can add to what I have written, other than to say that I have a few more (undated) newspaper cuttings.
I was playing for the new club in 1974, yet the following year I was elsewhere. Not being one to wander from club to club as my fancy took me, it is probable that the club had then folded.
For some reason I have a vague recollection of Preston Nomads using the pitch afterwards.
Mike Rice and I played together some years later at Goring. With his teacher background, he should have a super memory and would probably be a mine of more useful information. Gerald Clark too.
Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful but at least you now have a strand of history for your archives.

Thank you vm Simon for your in depth pre-1978/9 histories of BBCC.
Question: Where in Hove is SOLEHAM?
We have Members who live in Hove and have NEVER heard of SOLEHAM; grateful for an indicator please.

I haven't seen YOUR photo, Simon...
However, I have seen a similar one in 06/07; fm a garden customer, back fm Oz, who played for BBCC in '74-'76 as a "youngster"; name of Tim Groves.
Might be the young'un on end of bench on photo?
Regards,

As one does, I have kept the fixture cards and averages from when I first started playing at club level.
In 1968, I joined Midway Cavaliers who then became Soleham in 1969.
If my (usually poor) memory serves me correctly, there was some kind of upheaval within the club and it split into two factions with the result that some players formed Soleham and some, I think, went to Blackstone.
But where the name Soleham (or even Midway Cavaliers) originated, I have absolutely no idea.

If I can find the email address you sent me, I'll let you have a copy of the match report and photo mentioned in my OP.
The name Tim Groves rings no bells.
