Club History

The club was re-formed in late 1978 as the result of beer-fuelled discussions in one of the local pubs by two of its cricket-loving regulars, who both thought that Beeding should have its own team. The pitch at that time was being used by a club from Hove. These two founding members served the club for several years, one as a player and captain, the other as an umpire.

The club played its first game at the Memorial Playing field on Sunday 13th May 1979 against Blue Circle, a team from the local cement works. The result, a win for B&B, was the first of many. Two of the players in that match are still playing for the club. The club remains one that plays mainly friendly Sunday fixtures against local teams wherever possible.

To provide matches for the growing membership, the club joined the Worthing Evening League in 1986. Subsequently a second team was entered in 1991, but survived for only 2 seasons. The remaining team withdrew at the end of the 1995 season, having at its peak reached the knockout cup final, losing in the last over. A second Sunday XI was introduced in 1988 and survived until the end of the 1992 season, when a sharp drop in membership saw it disbanded.

From the 1980 season, the club has toured other counties, normally playing 3 matches over the August Bank Holiday. Venues have included Gloucester, Worcester, Wiltshire, Cambridgeshire, Devon and more recently, Kent. There was a gap from 1991 to 1998 where only half a match in Devon was managed.

A disagreement with the Parish Council saw the club leave the village in 1997 only to return in 2006. During that period, the club played its home matches at Steyning Grammar School, Steyning Cricket Club and Buckingham Park, Shoreham.

To date the club has played 928 matches, including friendly, evening league, tour and colts. During that time 366 players have participated, including members, guests, colts, oap’s and even two ladies. The youngest player was 12 and the oldest 70 and still playing.

This season saw the first 20/20 club tournament, 3 teams competing, comprised mainly of club members. The club captain, vice captain and chairman captained the teams, the club captain’s team being victorious. All 3 games were successfully played with experimental pink balls. Which is amazing, when you think about it.
